In a different direction….

Greetings from a balmy Maryland.

We are gearing up for the parental units to arrive beginning Sunday and then again on Wednesday.  It’s really going to feel like Thanksgiving here this year.

I’ve not blogged much I know and I’m sorry.  Being a mother of a pre-teen is mentally exhausting.  If you have kids, you understand.

I decided to try something different and it still involves dying the yarn and knitting…..DESIGN.  Yep, I stuck my toes in and it was fun.  I have my first published pattern on Ravelry and in my shop and you can get it.  I went slow and steady with this and wonderful knitter friends did the tech edits for me.  Here it is, may I present, Snug Harbor Infinity Cowl by yours truly.

It’s a wonderful cowl that combines my love of lace, texture and stripes.  Think about all the possible color combinations.  This is my favorite way to wear it but it can also be worn long.  I did this in Yankee Sole II, fingering weight yarn.  Help share the love on Ravelry!!

I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did designing and knitting it.  And that  is what I’ve been up to.  What’s on your needles?

Till next time…..!

Grey, grey and more grey…..

I don’t know about you guys but the grey days are killing me.  I really noticed that December and January have been very bleak to say the least.  On the rare sunny days I find myself literally “soaking it up” as much as possible.  Spring will be here soon, right?

The weather gave New England a wild blizzard named Juno.  I guess the weather folks decided to name ALL storms from now on.  As if they need anything else to fuel their excitement over anything weather related.  I digress…on to knitting.

I went on a knitting retreat 2 weekends ago and had a wonderfully relaxing time. Great company, good food, knitting and chick flicks equals lots of fun.

I finished my sweater and actually wore it.

It is so comfortable and the fit is just perfect.  This is when you are happy that you did a swatch and blocked that swatch.   The pattern is Window to my Soul by  Joji Locatelli.  The yarn is Yankee Stride in the Under the Sea color.  This is the second garment that I have made by her and I really like the way she designs.

I also made this for this upcoming weekend because it grabbed my attention while on vacation this past summer.  I am so fortunate that I will be taking a class with Stephen West and StevenBe at Fibre Space on Saturday.  It will be tons of fun.  Here is Vertices Unite by Stephen West.

As a dyer, you know that color fascinates me.  I used the exact same pink in the lower section to the right.  It is actually a pink and grey stripe and then to the left the same pink is paired with navy.  See how different it looks.  I love it!!  All the yarn is hand dyed by me in Yankee Sole II.  It is a great stash buster and the color possibilities are endless.  It has a lovely i-cord bind off that really gives it a proper finish.  I will be wearing this on Saturday when I meet Mr. West!!  Oh yeah, there will be pictures!!!

I hope that your week is going well.  If you are in New England, I know what you are doing…shovel, shovel, shovel!!

I’ll see you soon!

Hugs,

Michele

Oy, the hormones….

And I don’t mean mine!!!  We are the parents of a pre-teen boy that I may not survive.  I’m mostly not kidding.  You never know what kid is going to get off the bus.  You sit and wait to see what comes out of his mouth.  He’s either going to love you or hate you.  It’s like living a soap opera everyday.  I enjoy every single minute that child is in school let me tell you.  And as everyone says to me, and this too shall pass.  I might see it pass through the bottom of alcohol.

Back to more reliable and stable topics, yarn and knitting.  My happy place!!  I may have forgotten to mention that county fairs are big around here and this year I entered 3 knitted items and was especially proud because they were all dyed by me.  Two of the items were lace, one a shawl and one a beaded lace scarf and actually the sweater had lace panels too!!  I was really thrilled to not only win 1st place with both the lace shawl and scarf, but the shawl won Best In Show and the comments on the back said that the scarf was considered also for the top honor.  My sweater took second place and I never did lay eyes on the sweater that took first.

It is finally getting chilly here and I can’t wait to wear all my new knitting pretties.

Sweater update:  It’s almost done.  I am working on one of the sleeves and should get to the button band and neckline this weekend.  I am hoping to wear it for Thanksgiving.  I’ll take an updated photo soon.

I hope all is well with you.

Be happy,

Michele

Following One’s Bliss….

Lately I have been spending more time at the dye pots and feeling the love.

Jam Mash Up

Jam Mash Up

A lovely knitter sent me this photo of her finished sock and by the time this post, her second had been done for hours.  Thank you Corrine for such a fabulous picture.  I just adore this color way and of course you can find it here.

I am very fortunate to be able to do what I love and get paid to follow my bliss essentially.  I had to unleash the restrictions I put on myself sometimes and go a bit wild and that’s how my new color ways, Pop Rocks, was born.

FullSizeRender-2

I think these are so much fun!!  Doing this makes my heart happy!!

In knitting news, I am 2 inches away from being done with the body of my sweater.  I’ve decided that short sleeves may indeed work in the long run.  I’ll keep you posted.

I hope you all are well and enjoying the wonderful weather!

I’ll see you soon!

Sweet, Sweet Mystery…

It was a joy to knit.  I love Romi’s attention to detail!  Her charts are sheer perfection!

I made this with Yankee Dyer Yarns, Yankee Sole II in Chap My Khaki’s and Chai   Latte and I dyed them myself.

Do you see the Owls peeking out at you! What a fabulous addition to the design.  And then the bind off.

Pretty Picots add the perfect balance for this shawl.  I loved knitting in as well as blocking it because nothing beats the magic of blocking!

If you haven’t experienced a Romi design, please do treat yourself.  It’s such a great journey!

If you like these colors and are thinking you might like to make one, please visit my shop, The Yankee Dyer, and I will hook you up!

I am wearing this Object of Affection to a wedding at the end of June. Perfect for a late day, outdoor wedding.

In other news, we are up to our neck in basil.  I see lots of pesto in my future.

DSC_0054

Did you know that you can make the pesto and freeze it in ice cube trays and use it all winter. I throw it in homemade spaghetti sauce, meatloaf and toss with veggies.

Have a wonderful and happy weekend!  See you next week!

Best,

Michele
