Unraveled…..

It’s a perfect summer day here in MD. Little humidity and just pretty perfect.  The birds are chirping, the windows are open and my butterfly bushes are full of natures wonders.

Things here have been a bit rough, hence the title of this blog.  And things might get goofy as some of what has been doing on sorta rhymes.  I saw the orthopedic hand specialist almost 2 weeks ago for a trigger finger issue.  I was told to stop what I was doing….knitting, dying…..and complete rest for 4-6 weeks, ice and sleep with a glove on, which I will admit is helping.  If you think there should have been a big crying jag, you would be correct, there have been several.  Next up my eye.  I developed at sty and it didn’t really present as one so off I went to eye doctor and it was a sty just a different kind.  Solution, warm compresses applied frequently.  Then I developed a rash on my right forearm, started small and as I scratched it grew.  I began treating with a topical something or other and dismissed it.  Then yesterday I wound up at the doctors for a separate issue whereas I took note that i had issues with all my appendages.  Before the doctor came in I had another good cry and got caught by said doctor.  It was nice to see her perk up and tell me she can help….thank you Lord because my hubby said I was becoming unravelled.  Frankly, who can blame me right?  She also addressed my hand and said if my hand felt better she didn’t think knitting for 5 minutes here and there would be a problem.  Yep, she got a big hug.  She took care of all my issues and gave me a shot for the arm and it’s only contact dermatitis and the eye is already better as is my toe.  I mean seriously I need a vacation!!!!

We will be heading to the Outer Banks on the 12th of August and I can’t wait.  Now I can plan a bit of knitting.  I am a huge fan of Amy Herzog and I think vacation knitting calls for a sweater.  Something easy and soothing like stockinette and my beautiful Rear Admiral color way in Yankee Harbor DK.  My swatch has been done for a while so I just need to plug in my info and pick my pattern which I think will be Cypress Cove.  It’s a beautiful open cardigan and I got to try it on and I adored it, plus no buttonholes!!

I have taken this forced down time to plan for the coming year and I have some great ideas for kits and new colors and even another new base.  It’s all very exciting and has kept me from a complete meltdown.  I am currently working on Purless by Romi Hill and today we get to spend some time together.  I’m using our beautiful Yakkity-Yak in Yak-Tober a rich heathered gold and available in our shop if you click on the link.

Now you know why I’ve been so quiet, I’ve been unravelling.

I also have other wonderful news.  We would like to welcome Ewe to You Yarns in Grand Blanc, Michigan to the Yankee Dyer Yarns family.  We are really getting around!!

I’m off for 5 minutes of bliss.

Hugs ~ Michele

Finished sweater and a birthday ……

We are in the homestretch of school and tomorrow he will be promoted to 9th grade which means high school here.  This year was a bit of a struggle for him and us but other parents have survived worse, we shall survive.

Our son also turned 14 on Saturday and he has the attitude to go with the age.  We had a nice day together and went to his favorite place for dinner.  Time does go quickly so grab what you can and enjoy.  I keep trying to physically hold onto to him but he resist…..LOL!  Here’s a little flash back at his baby cuteness.  Look at that pouty baby bottom lip.

In knitting news I finished my Custom Fit Sweater!!!  It’s a rather shameful story really.  The entire and I do mean the ENTIRE sweater was done.  It was blocked, sewn together, ends woven in, buttons, thread and a pretty ribbon all  purchased and all together in a pretty bag.  My nemesis, the freaking button bands.  I kinda suck at the whole buttonhole thing.  I decided that I needed to overcome that so I proceeded with the directions and put the band with the buttons on the wrong side.  No bid deal, it’s only 10 rows, mission accomplished.  Now for the one with the buttonholes.  Amy Herzog the designer of the Charlie Cardigan said to use an eyelet buttonhole and someone told me the one row buttonhole was better but I hate how fussy it is and I also realized that I NEVER button my cardigans so the eyelet one would do just fine.  Before I knew it I was sewing on the pretty grosgrain ribbon and then the buttons and I just LOVE it!!  Tell me what you think.  I’m currently swatching for another sweater in her custom fit collection.

Had to wait for my son, the photographer, to take some pictures for me.

It’s actually chilly here today so I am wearing it to knit night!

Lastly, the Frederick Fiber Festival will be taking place this weekend and our yarns are sold exclusively in Maryland by Knit Locally.  If you are going please stop by and say Hi to Peggy and let your fingers fondle all the beautiful yarns she is bringing with her!

I’ll see you back here soon!

Let’s catch up….

I have started so many blog post and not finished them that it should be a crime and they were good in the moment, but that moment has passed.

I forgot to tell you all about my exciting and liberating retreat with Amy Herzog.  It was hosted by The Knitting Boutique here in MD and I jumped at the chance to go.  I actually jumped at the chance last July and it wasn’t until March of this year.  I was very thankful of the payment plan and thrilled that it was just a couple of hours from me.  The location was divine as was the food and Amy.  I learned so much.  She is positively brilliant and if you get a chance to go to one of her events I can’t recommend it highly enough.  Her Custom Fit is just flipping genius.  Here in a nutshell is what is so brilliant.  I live south of the Mason Dixon line and worsted weight sweaters are pretty limited in these parts.  The beauty of Amy’s program is, find a yarn that makes you happy.  Swatch and block it.  She has a variety of swatch test to either ensure your success of not in her books and I did them all.  Yarn passed that test and it’s a DK, more wearable for these parts.  Here’s the touchy feely part, you have to take lots of measurements and this is all explained in her book.  Once you have your gauge and your measurements, off you go to here website, plug everything in and SHAZAM, a custom pattern just for you!!  No highlighting anything.  This sweater is destined for success.  I took a couple of pictures upon our arrival and then just melted into the wonderful weekend it was.
